Psalm 91:9 says, "Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place - the Most High, who is my refuge - no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent." What an awesome promise from the Word of God. Yet, I realize that as King David wrote this, he did not have the New Covenant understanding of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of the Most High.
In David's time the blessing was to those who made God their dwelling place. In our time, under the New Covenant of life in Christ, the blessing is that He has made me His dwelling place. Wow!! This change in position parallels the change from living under law to living in His grace.
Under the system of the law in the Old Testament, everything was about what a person made it, how closely they followed the rules, and if they followed them closely enough to be accepted by God. Under New Testament grace, its all about what Jesus made it, how He followed the rules perfectly because we could not, and how Christ accepted us to the glory of God. (Romans 15:7)
If the promise of protection of Psalm 91 was amazing based on where we placed God in our lives, how much more amazing are the promises of protection when the Most High has made us the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit as soon as we invite Jesus Christ to be the Lord of our lives.
